Give the day one main purpose
Oberwiesenthal lies beside the Fichtelberg in the Ore Mountains. For a day trip from Chemnitz, the key decision is not the order of a long attraction list. It is whether you mainly want a narrow-gauge railway journey, time on the mountain or a visit to the town. Those interests can be combined, but the length of the day and the actual transport connections set the limits.
Start by finding a workable outward and return journey for your date. Work backwards from the time you want to be back. This reveals how much time remains at the destination and whether another change of transport fits. A trip into the mountain region should not depend on assuming an equivalent connection will always follow later in the evening.
Distinguish the two railways
The Fichtelbergbahn is the narrow-gauge railway between Cranzahl and Oberwiesenthal. Riding it can be the main activity of the day. The Fichtelberg-Schwebebahn is the cable car up the mountain. The similar names are easy to confuse when planning, but they refer to different forms of transport and different operating information.
If the narrow-gauge journey is your priority, check its timetable directly, then add the connection to Cranzahl and the journey back from Oberwiesenthal as appropriate. For a mountain trip, the cable car's operating status and final return departure matter instead. Do not automatically combine ticket assumptions: an offer for one railway need not include the other journey.
Let conditions shape the mountain visit
Clear skies in Chemnitz do not tell you how comfortable the summit will be. Consult local weather and operating information. Wind, visibility and the season affect the experience more than an attractive photograph suggests. If conditions do not suit the mountain visit you imagined, time in the town should work as an alternative in its own right.
For a walk or hike, choose a currently described route with a distance and height change suited to your group. Taking a cable car does not replace planning the path afterwards. In particular, know how you will get down if you spend longer outside than expected. In winter, designated walking routes should not be treated as interchangeable with any path shown on a summer map.
Keep some time for Oberwiesenthal itself
Even on a day built around a railway or the mountain, leave a continuous stretch of time for the town. Use it for a walk, a meal or simply a break between journeys. Filling every available interval with another destination can turn the visit into an exercise in watching the clock.
Before leaving, put your chosen return connection into the plan and allow a margin for reaching the departure point. The linked operator websites provide the details that can change. With those decisions made, the excursion remains manageable even when you deliberately choose only one part of what the area offers.
